Keeping Faith: Houses of Worship &
Historic Preservation
Houses of worship have defined the cultural and spiritual
aspirations of communities throughout the world and throughout human history. They
usually represented the pinnacle in artistic achievement, monumental expression and
praise. Inspired by the archives of Yale Professor Edmund Sinnott, who spent 30 years
studying and photographing New England meetinghouses and churches and gathering
information for a book on that subject, this program
is designed to underscore the importance of historic resources of the faith traditions
in Connecticut and the Connecticut Valley. This program will dazzle audiences with
evidence of architectural beauty, foster care and
awareness of the importance of houses of worship as civic, cultural and architectural
landmarks; portray ecclesiastical landmarks and material culture as a form of praise;
encourage the continuing use of historic structures
for religious purposes; stimulate imagination about complementary or adaptive reuse;
build bridges of understanding between the faith and historic preservation communities
and showcase the work of urban ministries that
triumphing against the odds.
